In 2025, the Croatian Library Association (CLA) proudly marks a major milestone — its 85th anniversary — a testament to its long-standing dedication to advancing librarianship, supporting professional growth, and promoting access to knowledge and culture throughout Croatia.
This significant anniversary will be celebrated during the 50th General Assembly of the Croatian Library Association, to be held November 11–12, 2025, Zagreb, National and University Library in Zagreb, gathering professionals from across the library and information science sector. The Assembly will serve not only as a platform for discussion and decision-making but also as a moment of reflection, celebration, and strategic planning.
Honoring the Past
Founded on March 14, 1940, the Croatian Library Association has played a vital role in shaping national library policy, advocating for libraries and librarians, and fostering international cooperation. Over the past eight and a half decades, the Association has become a key voice in education, research, and public service, while continually adapting to the evolving needs of users and the profession.
Building the Future: Development Initiatives
The 50th Assembly will also highlight several development projects that are currently reshaping the Croatian library landscape:
- Digital Transformation and Open Access: The CLA is actively promoting digitization projects, the use of open educational resources, and support for open access publishing, ensuring broader and equitable access to information.
- Lifelong Learning and Professional Development: Through specialized training programs, conferences, and mentorship, the Association is investing in the continuous education of library professionals to meet the demands of a rapidly changing digital and social environment.
- Inclusion and Accessibility: A key focus is placed on improving library services for marginalized groups, including persons with disabilities, national minorities, and rural communities, through targeted initiatives and inclusive policy-making.
- Sustainability and Green Libraries: In line with global trends, the CLA supports the development of environmentally responsible library practices and the role of libraries in promoting sustainability awareness.
- International Cooperation and Visibility: The Association continues to expand its presence in international networks and forums, fostering collaboration with European and global partners to bring innovation and best practices to Croatian libraries.
Looking Ahead
The 50th General Assembly will be a forward-looking event, reaffirming the Association’s mission to support libraries as dynamic, inclusive, and innovative spaces for learning, research, and community building.
We invite our members, partners, and friends to join us in celebrating this momentous occasion — and to help shape the future of libraries in Croatia.
